“Soul Sista”-Bilal

“Soul Sista”-Bilal

Bilal is a classically trained soul singer from Philly, but make no mistake, his training hasn’t affected his output any (I still don’t understand why people think that knowing classical music affects creativity). This track is about a girl that braodened his mind, and is marked by a really great bassline courtesy of Raphael Saadiq! It’s a great tune that shows off Bilal’s pipes, melodic ability, and his poetic lyrics. I saw him at Atlantis and even though he only sang for about 45 seconds, you can tell that regardless of the industry, Bilal is an artist making real music, with little concern for commercial viability. It’s rare when an artist is able to take some of those kinds of risks on an album. Check this tune out!

Yes, I’m still alive

Hey kids!

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written, it’s been busy! The Atlantis Music Conference was this past week and it was a great time even though I wasn’t playing. But rest assured, next year will be the year of Adam James! The record is coming along well, I’m just waiting for mixes on the most recently recorded material, and I’m even thinking about expanding it one more track possibly. It’s just a thought, but who knows, it may happen!

“Love You To Death”-Type O Negative

Okay okay, I don’t want ANY crap about this one! NONE!! This is a good tune! It begins softly with nothing but piano and frontman Pete Steele’s basement-deep voice. You think, “okay, so this is gonna be some goth ballad, I can handle that,” when the guitars, bass, and drumz come in with the doom to Steele’s gloom. The thing I love about this track is just the overall sound. I’ve listened to a LOT of heavy music, but there aren’t any bands that really sound like this, and I dig that. Steele’s voice, while processed to death, sounds original (there aren’t enough singers in heavy bands who have deep voices) and when mixed with the sheer sound of the instruments, it creates something very cool and atmospheric.

Recording update, Correction (please don’t beat me!)

G’day mates!

A little pirate lingo for you there! Just wanted to send a quick update to let you know that the recording process is going really well! We’ve got “We Could Be So Happy” just about done, only waiting on some piano, “You Are My Star” looking pretty as we’ve got most of that one done as well, and “Shine” coming up around the bend only needing some guitars, piano, and vocals.

Don’t forget, I’ll be playing September 17th at Park Tavern around 6:30pm. This is where the correction comes in. ‘member how I said Gomez would be playing this show? Well, uh, I, uh, kinda lied about that. I was TOLD they would be playing, but apparently are not. So as of now, you’ve got me, Regina Spektor, and a mystery artist playing on the
17th. And surprises are always fun, right? :D

OTHER STUFF THAT WILL MAKE YOU RODEO YOUR ARM AND HOOT LIKE ARSENIO HALL
——————————————————————————————–
-Well it’s official! The recording part of my upcoming EP “jazzrocksoul” is DONE!!! All that needs to be done is mixing, mastering, getting the art together, and printing this beast up! My tentative plan is to hold onto it until the new year, in the meantime, I’ll be revamping my live show at various open mics around the area. I dont’ know if I’ll be booking many “official” gigs as of right now, but I may come out of the woodshed here and there to play some. I’ll have a couple new videos up at www.adamjames.net and I’ll be working on a few projects back at the house that I’ll probably put samples of up on Myspace.

“Crazy Bitch”-Buckcherry

Just when you thought these freaks were done and out of the game (they DID break up a few years back) they come back with this, probably the catchiest rock track I can remember in recent years. Yeah it’s got a great hook, cool guitar parts, a sweet bassline (if you turn your bass boost up, this album’s mastering job is horrible), and dirty, yet really fun to sing lyrics, but its biggest plus is that it just plain rocks. I have the album and it rocks too, not as hard as this song, but it rocks. And damn it, isn’t that what rock music is supposed to do? So yeah, this is a seriously great track, an ode to emotionally unstable, yet sexually skilled females. Eat it up!

And I dont’ want to hear anything about that thin-as-paper “New York Style” crap! It ain’t the same! But i Digress…..

-I will be embarking in my brand new Funk Wagon (and for those of you who know me well, this will mean that you won’t have to pick me up anymore when we hang out! I bet I start getting more social calls after this ;^P ) for Albany, New York where I’ll start recording final versions of “We Could Be So Happy,” “You Are My Star,” and if time permits, “Shine.” I’ll try to keep you updated as the process goes on, but let it be known, the ep’s recording process will be soon drawing to a close (Thank GOD!)

Champion of “alliteration” right here!!! (for those who didnt’ pay attention in English class, that’s when you rhyme words that have similar beginning sounds)

-On Thursday, I’ll be flying out to New York to visit my friends and family up there, but also to begin the final stages of recording for the “jazzrocksoul” ep! “You Are My Star,” “We Could Be So Happy,” and possibly “Shine” will be getting star treatment at the studio of Greg Tobler who has also assisted on records by Norah Jones and Joan Baez! And he also just happens to be a close friend! I’ll give you updates while I’m there!

Open Mic Madness wrap-up, Regina Spektor Show

Well, you can probably surmise from my lack of communique in the last couple days that I didn’t win Open Mic Madness this year, Lol! I was actually eliminated Thursday night after having some equipment problems and a somewhat tense performance as the result of said problems. But there’s always next year! Congratulations to this year’s winners Dead Confederate. You can check them out at www.myspace.com/deadconfederate

BUT! It’s time to move on to something even bigger! As some of you know, I’ve got a show booked at Park Tavern for the 99X Unplugged In The Park opening for Regina Spektor and Gomez! Howzabout that!
